Restaurant review: SHE at Lane Crawford in Hong Kong

A new jewel box of a restaurant within Lane Crawford IFC

SHÈ is a beauty of a restaurant, located within the beauty department of Lane Crawford at IFC. It might be a surprising location for a new restaurant but think of it as a hidden gem, and one that has a Harbour view. Given the name (pronounced kind of like ‘meh’...please don’t judge my poor Mandarin skills!) and location, it’s unsurprising that the space is very feminine decorated with various jewel tones, printed wallpaper, and mirrored accents. But the space is proving popular with men and women alike because the food, well, it’s very good.

We started off with a few dim sum dishes. The Rose Gold Har Gao ($52) was beautiful though it tasted just like regular har gao to me. The black sesame crusted Stuffed Truffle Balls with Minced Meat and Mushrooms ($56) stood out more, a luxe take on the standard deep-fried glutinous rice dumpling.

Deep-fried seafood dishes are always a hit and SHÈ does them very well. I couldn’t get enough of the Crispy Fresh Abalone with Salt and Pepper ($198). Usually, I eat abalone at wedding banquets and it comes in the traditional, goopy sauce. This version is much better.

The Caviar Shrimp Toast ($88) were pretty decent and not too oily.

Also good were the Yin Yang-style Prawns ($268), half horseradish and half salted egg yolk. I would have liked the horseradish to be a little sweeter but the prawns themselves were fresh and juicy.

Definitely go for the Signature Fish Maw Nourishing Pot ($888 with either wagyu or lobster, order one day in advance) if you can. The broth was sweetened with goji berries and the fish maw was incredibly tender. A super hearty and filling yet healthy dish.

Sadly, I didn’t manage to snag a photo of the Wok-fried Supreme Lobster Noodles ($388) but here’s one of my portion. This was delicious with springy noodles and meaty lobster chunks in a light batter. Definitely a dish that would contribute to winter weight but one that’s worth it.

Verdict

Check out SHÈ next time you’re looking for trendy, chic Chinese food in Central. The prices are reasonable given the quality of the food and location. It’d be a great spot for your next date or girls night.
