[Closed] New menu review: The Restaurant by The Kinnet in Sheung Wan, Hong Kong

New low carb and low calorie menus

For those unfamiliar with The Kinnet, it’s a women’s only health and fitness centre in Sheung Wan. The vibe of the whole building is bright and modern, but food lovers will likely have heard of it for its restaurant. Known as The Restaurant by The Kinnet, it’s been serves up “good for you” meals. Its mission says “What we eat fuels our bodies, minds and spirits. So it is no surprise that eating well is one of the keys to improving your total holistic wellness and staving off the signs of age.” I love eating out so can sometimes overdo it and feel heavy and sluggish during the week. The Kinnet is one place that's making it easier for busy Hong Kongers to eat more healthily.

The first time I went to The Restaurant by The Kinnet was actually by fluke. My friends and I had wanted to go to a cafe down the street but it wasn’t open yet. While wandering a few metres away, we came across The Kinnet, a place we’d all heard of but never tried. That day for brunch I had a latte with almond milk and an eggs benedict with yogurt-based hollandaise on gluten free bread. I’d skip the gluten free bread next time but overall the food was tasty and healthy, and the environment was great for catching up on some work and reading. When I heard The Restaurant by The Kinnet had launched a low carb menu and a low calories menu, I couldn’t wait to try them.

Both the low carb and low calories menus are two courses for $238 or three courses for $268.

We tried a bite of many delicious things, but for ease here are the options broken down along with notes of some favourites (A for Appetizer, M for Main, D for Dessert).

From the low calories menu

  • (A) Steamed Tofu Salad with asparagus and shiso vinaigrette

  • (A) Grilled Vegetables Salad, with eggplant, zucchini, vine tomato, sugar snap peas, feta with pesto

  • (M) Chicken Paillard with baby spinach, vine tomatoes, rocket leaves, radish, red cabbage salad

  • (M) Whole Wheat Spaghetti with sun-dried tomato pesto, zucchini, eggplant, onion, basil and Parmesan

  • (M) Seared Halibut with white bean cauliflower cake and mizuna tomato salad

  • (D) Vanilla Souffle Mixed Berries

Everything is worth eating, but I especially loved the Steamed Tofu Salad. It had a mealy (homemade?) texture and was very fragrant. The asparagus and shiso vinaigrette added distinct flavours without any heaviness. The chicken paillard is nice and lean, and enjoyed how marinated cabbage could add such flavour to the dish.

Healthy restaurant in Hong Kong

From the low carbs menu

  • (A) Detox Watercress Salad with pear, spinach, walnut, Parmesan, pomegranate, cilantro yoghurt dressing

  • (A) Chicken Vegetable Soup

  • (M) Seared Cod with Warm Tom Yum Salad

  • (M) Chicken Thai Basil with chili, fried egg, cauliflower rice

  • (M) Green Vegetable Curry with zucchini noodles, cauliflower, broccoli, eggplant, vine tomatoes

  • (D) Rose Creme Brulee

This was my favourite of the two menus, and I’ll definitely be suggesting this to friends the next time we feel like Thai food. Our piece of seared cod was perfectly cooked and moist, and the Tom Yum sauce and cooked vegetables suited it perfectly. The Chicken Thai Basil had all the flavour of the same dish from your local Thai place, but was much less oily and served with cauliflower rice instead. And I don’t know what’s healthy about the rose creme brulee. It tasted full fat to me, but I’m not complaining…!

Verdict

Food at The Restaurant by The Kinnet is definitely some of the tastiest and most inventive health food I’ve had in Hong Kong. It’s a casual spot, but well decorated and has a lovely terrace.
