Singleness and love
*And they have defeated him by the blood of the Lamb and by their testimony. And they did not love their lives so much that they were afraid to die. (Revelation 12:11)
I’ve been thinking about this a lot this week, about living life with God at the centre, of being willing to do whatever he says, of not being afraid of death. Maybe it’s because my church recently had a few sermons on singleness and I was reminded of Paul’s encouragement to singles. And how in singleness there can be less “anxieties” about “worldly things” (1 Cor 7:32-34), to please a spouse.
Marriage is a wonderful thing - God loves marriage! I want marriage too but, finally, I truly want God more (in the past, I never intentionally put a desire for marriage before God but probably was in the time I spent complaining about it to him. 😅) I want to live life as close to God as possible. So in my prayers for a future spouse, I’ve started to pray for someone who also wants to be in covenant with someone who brings him closer to God. I pray for someone who is on his knees before God daily, listening, looking for him, passionately loving him and humbly obeying him as quickly as possible. For singles, that’s the goal isn’t it? To passionately burn for God brighter together than we could apart? 🙏
Sometimes people talk about how sanctifying marriage is. That when you spend so much time with another human, having to care for another human, your human-ness can come out. But bring it on, amen? May we enjoy God’s pruning, even when it’s tough - anything that will bring us closer to God, help us to be more Christ-like.
A few of my thoughts this morning. ❤️
Lord, I honour you and love you. I pray you help each and every one of us to hear your voice clearly today and walk in the path you’ve called us to. May we lay down any idols - may we have no idols before you! May we learn to really live for you everyday, enjoying what it is to obey you, knowing your ways are best. This life we see is not forever, there is so much more ahead! Help us to keep our eyes fixed on you, and not miss what you’re doing, not miss opportunities to experience your love. May we love to be filled to overflowing, swimming in your love daily, knowing the Lord of Heaven and Earth is for us. May we live fully for you. In Jesus’s name, I pray. Amen.
